ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 lockdown contributes to the improvement of air quality. Most previous studies have attributed this to the reduction of human activity while ignoring the meteorological changes, this may lead to an overestimation or underestimation of the impact of COVID-19 lockdown measures on air pollution levels. To investigate this issue, we propose an XGBoost-based model to predict the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 during the COVID-19 lockdown period in 2022, Shanghai, and thus explore the limits of anthropogenic emission on air pollution levels by comprehensively employing the meteorological factors and the concentrations of other air pollutants. Results demonstrate that actual observations of PM2.5 and PM10 during the COVID-19 lockdown period were reduced by 60.81% and 43.12% compared with the predicted values (regarded as the period without the lockdown measures). In addition, by comparing with the time series prediction results without considering meteorological factors, the actual observations of PM2.5 and PM10 during the lockdown period were reduced by 50.20% and 19.06%, respectively, against the predicted values during the non-lockdown period. The analysis results indicate that ignoring meteorological factors will underestimate the positive impact of COVID-19 lockdown measures on air quality. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze and compare the effects of different clinical characteristics on the negative conversion time of nucleic acid detection after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant infection, and to provide a scientific basis for the isolation and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: The epidemiological and clinical data of 228 mild SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infected patients diagnosed in Shanghai were retrospectively collected from April 27, 2022 to June 8, 2022 in Wujiaochang designated Hospital, Yangpu District, Shanghai. The negative conversion time of nucleic acid detection was used as the outcome variable, and the patients were divided into A (18 days) and B (>18 days). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the influencing factors of the negative conversion time of nucleic acid detection. Results: The mean nucleic acid conversion time of 228 patients was (18.7+or-12.1) d, with the median time of 18 (2-46) d. Among them, 120 patients in group A had an average nucleic acid conversion time of (13.2+or-2.0) d, and 108 cases in group B had an average nucleic acid conversion time of (20.8+or-1.3) d. Univariate analysis showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the effects of hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypokalemia, malignant tumors, neuropsychiatric diseases, chronic digestive diseases on the negative nucleic acid conversion time (P > 0.05);however, there were significant differences in the effects of combined cerebrovascular disease, leukopenia, chronic respiratory system diseases and vaccination on the negative nucleic acid conversion time (P < 0.05). Further multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the combination of chronic respiratory diseases and non-vaccination were significant risk factors for prolongation of negative nucleic acid conversion time (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study show that gender, age and whether hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypokalemia, malignant tumor, neuropsychiatric disease and chronic digestive disease have no significant effect on the nucleic acid conversion time, whereas chronic respiratory disease and no vaccination are significantly correlated with the prolongation of nucleic acid conversion time in SARS-CoV-2 Omicron-infected patients.

ABSTRACT

As COVID-19 mutates, the highly infectious omicron mutants (BA. 5.2., BF. 7) tension shrouded China. Given the internet information explosion and youth social media addiction, observing the mental impact on college students during the 2022 Shanghai closure is worthwhile. A pilot survey study was conducted to explore the anxiety levels of college students during the closure. The sample size was limited to 101 second-year college students. In addition to demographics, the survey involved the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, self-perceived COVID-19 anxiety, frequency of COVID-19 information reception, number of social media accounts, and number of electronic devices. Though 68.4% of students equipped with two electronic devices (N = 95) exceeded the students with only one electronic device, a Chi-square test showed that students with only one electronic device had the highest anxiety index (mean = 50). Further, the Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that the number of electronic devices affected the students' anxiety level (p = 0.027) while social media membership did not (p = 0.565). As a result, it was suggested that social media usage and pandemic information inputs among college students were significant concerns that required special attention from the government, schools, teachers, and families.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the characteristics of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in college students during the outbreak of COVID-19, and to explore the mediating role of psychological resilience between social support and PTSD. Methods By using direct selection method, 572 college students in Anhui and Shanghai were selected and administered with General Characteristics Questionnaire, the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version(PCL-C), Psychological Resilience Scale(PRS) and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS). Results Among the participants, 25.0% had moderate PTSD symptoms, 11.7% had obvious PTSD symptoms, and the positive rate of PTSD was 36.7%. The prevalence of PTSD in college students was higher in males than in females (X2=4.31, P < 0.05). The junior students were higher than other students (X2=16.81, P < 0.01). The scores of social support, psychological resilience and PTSD were (33.79+or-4.83), (92.17+or-13.39) and (35.50+or-11.39), respectively. The correlations of all variables were statistically significant(r=-0.49-0.76, P < 0.05);The mediation test showed that social support could not only negatively predict PTSD directly(direct effect was -0.35), but also indirectly affect PTSD through psychological resilience(indirect effect was -0.32). Conclusion More than one third of college students have PTSD symptoms, and psychological resilience plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between social support and PTSD, social support can both directly and negatively predict PTSD and indirectly affect PTSD by increasing an individual's psychological resilience.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the clinical features, causal agent and transmission mode of a fever outbreak in a school in Shanghai. Methods: Field epidemiological approaches including case definition development, searching for contacts, distribution of diseases description, environmental sampling and laboratory testing. Results: A total of 16 influenza-like cases were included, all concentrated in the one class of grade two, including 15 students and 1 teacher. Among student cases, the incidence rate was 36.59%(15/41), the average age was 7.4 years, the incidence rate was 36.84%(7/19) for boys, 36.36%(8/22) for girls. The clinical course was 5-15 days, with the median of 9 days, and 18.75%(3/16) of the cases stayed studying while sick. The nasopharyngeal swab specimens in 16 cases all tested positive for influenza B, of which 11 tested positive for mycoplasma pneumoniae and 1 case also tested positive for coronavirus OC43. Body temperature, number of mononuclear cells, and treatment time of patients infected with Influenza B and mycoplasma pneumoniae were higher than those of patients infected with influenza B alone(P < 0.05). The outbreak lasted for 12 days, all sick students were treated and discharged from hospital, with no severe cases or death, and the outbreak was effectively controlled. Conclusion: This campus cluster outbreak caused by influenza B and mycoplasma pneumoniae. Patients with influenza B with mycoplasma pneumoniae have severe symptoms and a long course of illness, suggesting the importance of early management of the epidemic.

ABSTRACT

As an emergency, food insecurity threatens people's well-being, while social capital is expected to enhance their resilience in this situation. This study examined the relationship between food insecurity and social capital during the COVID-19 lockdowns in Shanghai. We collected a dataset of 1064 participants by random sampling. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the dynamics of social capital before and after lockdowns. The results show that the level of post-lockdown social capital was higher than that of pre-lockdown social capital. Pre-lockdown social capital predicted the extent to which people suffered from food insecurity and their approaches to obtaining food. Participation in group purchases and food exchange with other residents predicted the levels of post-lockdown social capital. The results shed light on the interaction between emergencies and social capital. Our study theoretically contributes to understanding social capital through a dynamic perspective. ABSTRACT

The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has seriously affected people's normal work, life, and medical treatment. Since Mar. 2022, there has been a pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant in Shanghai. In order to meet the needs of hospitalization for patients, and at the same time for better control of epidemic and nosocomial infections, a large hospital in Shanghai innovatively set up a centralized transition ward in the hospital, and established scientific rules of medical work, regulations for prevention of nosocomial infections and efficient norms for patient admission. During the operation of the ward, a total of 211 patients were treated and one of the patients was confirmed of COVID-19 recurrence. All work was carried out methodically, and neither hospitalized patients nor medical staff had nosocomial infection of COVID-19. The preparation, operation and management of the central transition ward in our hospital are summarized here to provide guidance and reference for general hospitals to carry out similar work under the epidemic.

ABSTRACT

The epidemic caused by the infection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 omicron variant broke out in Shanghai in Mar. 2022. Omicron variant has characteristics such as strong concealment and rapid transmission, resulting in significant differences between the current round of epidemic and that in Wuhan. The number of infected patients (mainly asymptomatic infected patients) increased rapidly in a short term. Based on dynamic zero policy, shelter hospitals were set up in time in Shanghai to treat the patients. It is suggested that medical resources and patient characteristics should be taken into account in the independent cabin of a shelter hospital with more than 10 000 beds, and the clinical medical practice should be divided to 5 modes (universal education and management, community outpatient clinic, ward duty, emergency rescue, and temporary observation and transport) to optimize the allocation of medical resources, so as to further enhance the treatment capacity and efficiency of shelter hospitals.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant in a shelter hospital in Shanghai. Methods: A total of 621 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant from Apr. 4 to May 24, 2022 in a shelter hospital in Shanghai were enrolled. The data of the patients, including the general information and common clinical syndromes (such as fever, headache, stuffy nose, runny nose, cough, and sputum), were collected on admission by TCM syndrome electronic scale, and core syndrome characteristics were analyzed base on the proportion of each symptom. The syndromes were divided according to the symptom score of patients, and the differences of disease course among the syndromes were compared. Results: The proportion of patients aged 30 to 49 years old was the highest among 621 patients infected with omicron variant (49.76%, 309/621). The most prominent symptoms were cough and expectoration, accounting for 62.32% (387/621) and 68.12% (423/621), respectively. The more common symptoms included sore throat, stuffy nose, runny nose, fatigue, muscle pain, and headache. White sputum was mostly seen in the expectoration and clear mucus was mostly seen in runny nose. According to the clinical symptoms, the core syndrome characteristic of patients infected with omicron variant was cold epidemic constraint in the lung featuring dampness and toxins. The main syndrome was plague invading the defensive exterior, accounting for 40.10% (249/621). The second and third ones were heat toxin attacking the lung syndrome (29.95%, 186/621) and dampness obstructing (17.55%, 109/621), while the least common syndrome was deficiency of qi and yin (7.73%, 48/621). The course of qi and yin deficiency was longer than the other 3 syndromes (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The core TCM syndrome characteristic of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant is cold epidemic constraint in the lung featuring dampness and toxins. The main syndrome is plague invading the defensive exterior. The pattern tends to convert into qi and yin deficiency along the long course.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo assess the effects of countermeasures against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Shanghai from March to May 2022 in comparison with epidemiological trend of COVID-19 in New York City. MethodsDaily confirmed cases, asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers, and daily deaths were obtained in the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States. Descriptive study was conducted by using these data. ResultsFrom March 1 to May 17, the number of daily asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections in Shanghai was up to 58 times as large as that of daily confirmed cases;however, the number of daily confirmed cases in Shanghai was generally less than that in New York in the same time period. At the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic, the growth of daily attack rate in Shanghai was significantly lower than that in New York (P < 0.05). Moreover, the number of daily death was evidently less than that in New York. In addition, the vaccination rate in the elderly (aged 60 years) in Shanghai was evidently lower than that in New York (aged 65 years). ConclusionThe COVID-19 epidemics in Shanghai from March to May 2022 and in New York after December 2021 were both caused by the Omicron variant. Compared with the Delta variant, the Omicron variant has stronger replication ability and infectivity, resulting in challenges to the containment of the epidemic in metropolis such as Shanghai and New York City. The epidemic in New York City remained crucial due to absence of effective countermeasures, while that in Shanghai has been effectively contained with strict countermeasures. The prevention and control strategies may be adjusted along with the continual evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and increasing trend of imported COVID-19 cases.

Import and export trade has become an organic part of China's national economy. Import and export trade accounts for nearly 35% of the national economy, which is a major part of China's economic growth. This article takes Shanghai Port as an example, collecting and analyzing the exporters of Shanghai Port in China from January to May 2020. Compared with the relevant data of the same period in 2019, this article discusses the major commodity categories that are affected by the epidemic situation in the export trade volume of Shanghai Port, giving countermeasures according to the influence situation in order to stabilize the quantity of this category in the future and reduce the risk of lower port trade volume of the export commodity categories affected by public health emergencies in China's port trade. At the same time, some suggestions and countermeasures are given to the ecological environment problems affecting the sustainable development of ports.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the viral shedding time and its influencing factors in different site samples of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARA-CoV-2) omicron BA.2 variant. Methods: Real-time fluorescence polymerase chain reaction was used to detect SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid in nasopharyngeal swab, sputum and anal swab from 217 patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who were infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 omicron BA.2 variant confirmed by gene sequencing in The First Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University (Second Military Medical University). The differences of viral shedding time of different site samples were compared. Stratified analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to explore the influencing factors of viral shedding time in different site samples. Results: The age of the 217 COVID-19 patients was 32.0 (24.0, 50.5) years old, 59.0% of them were males (n=128), and 41.0% were females (n=89). Eight (3.7%) cases were diagnosed with asymptomatic infection, 184 (84.8%) cases were mild type, 21 (9.7%) cases were moderate type, 3 (1.4%) cases were severe type, and 1 (0.5%) case was critical type. A total of 70 (32.3%) patients were treated with molnupiravir. The viral shedding time of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid in nasopharyngeal swab, sputum and anal swab was 13.0 (11.0, 17.0) d, 16.5 (13.0, 21.0) d and 10.0 (5.3, 11.0) d, respectively, with the differences being significant between them (all P<0.001). Age 60 years old, underlying diseases (especially hypertension, coronary artery diseases, or neurological diseases), and clinical classification of moderate type were risk factors for prolonged viral shedding time in nasopharyngeal swab;male sex and underlying diseases were risk factors for prolonged viral shedding time in sputum;and male sex was a risk factor for prolonged viral shedding time in anal swab. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that critical type was an independent risk factor for prolonged viral shedding time in nasopharyngeal swab (P<0.05), and male sex and underlying diseases were independent risk factors for prolonged viral shedding time in sputum (both P<0.05). Conclusion: Among patients infected with omicron BA.2 variant, the viral shedding time in sputum is the longest and that in anal swab is the shortest. Male patients and/or patients with underlying diseases have longer viral shedding time in sputum.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to understand the epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the paediatric population during the outbreak of the Omicron variant in Shanghai. We retrospectively analysed the population-based epidemiological characteristics and clinical outcome of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection in children in Minhang District, Shanghai, based on the citywide surveillance system during the outbreak period in 2022 (March to May). During this time, a total of 63,969 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were notified in Minhang District, out of which 4,652 (7.3%) were children and adolescents <18 years. The incidence rate of SARS-CoV-2 infections in children was 153 per 10,000. Of all paediatric cases, 50% reported to be clinically symptomatic within 1-3 days after PCR confirmation by parents or themselves, with 36.3% and 18.9% of paediatric cases reporting fever and cough. Also, 58.4% of paediatric cases had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 52.1% had received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination. Our findings are informative for the implementation of appropriate measures to protect children from the threat of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Since 1979, China has experienced dazzling economic progress thanks to economic reforms and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) projects. Disciplined labor processes and government involvement have been key factors in its financial and technological success. Cities such as Shanghai and Shenzhen have become fundamental pillars in scientific and technological development, based on the creation of new energies, robotics, health, telecommunications, biotechnology, genetics, space exploration, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, making the Asian giant a global technological hub. The objective of this research is to analyze the technological impact of Shanghai and Shenzhen, considered as Special Economic Zones of High Technological Development (ZEEADT) because they are fundamental pillars in the continuity of China as the first world economic power. As a result of this efficiency, the Asian country has continued to grow and strengthen even during the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To compare the myopic progression in children treated with 0. 01% atropine and those who discontinued atropine during the 2022-home quarantine in Shanghai. Methods: In this retrospective study, children aged 6-13 years with follow-up visits before (between January 2022 and February 2022) and after the lockdown (between July 2022 and August 2022) were included. Cycloplegic refraction and axial length (AL) were measured at both visits. The atropine group had continuous medication during the lockdown while the control group discontinued. The 0.01% atropine eyedrops were administered daily before bedtime. The types of spectacle lens were recorded: single vision (SV) spectacles or defocus incorporated multiple segments lenses (DIMS). Results: In total, 41 children (81 eyes) in the atropine group and 32 children (64 eyes) in the control group were enrolled. No significant difference was found in the demographic characteristics, spherical diopter, spherical equivalent (SE), AL, and follow-up time between the two groups before the lockdown in 2022 (all p > 0.1). After the home confinement, a greater myopia progression was observed in the control group (-0.46 ± 0.42 D) compared to atropine group (-0.26 ± 0.37 D; p = 0.0023). Axial elongation was also longer in the control group than that in children sustained with atropine (0.21 ± 0.17 vs. 0.13 ± 0.15 mm, p = 0.0035). Moreover, there was no significant change of spherical diopter and SE during lockdown in the atropine + DIMS combined subgroup (0.03 ± 0.033 D for spherical diopter, p = 0.7261 and 0.08 ± 0.27 D for SE, p = 0.2042, respectively). However, significant myopic shift was observed in the atropine + SV subgroup during the quarantine time (-0.31 ± 0.39 D for SE and 0.15 ± 0.16 mm for AL, both p < 0.001). Conclusion: Children treated with 0.01% atropine had slower myopia progression during the lockdown period in Shanghai compared with children discontinued. Moreover, the effect of atropine on myopic prevention can be strengthened with DIMS lenses.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the changes in incidence of notifiable infectious diseases in Jiading district of Shanghai in the context of COVID-19 epidemic. Methods: The incidence data of notifiable infectious disease in Jiading during 2017-2021 were collected for the comparison of the incidence rates before and after the implementation of COVID-19 prevention and control measures. Results: The incidence rate of notifiable infectious diseases in Jiading was 167.59/100000 in 2020, 60.20% lower than the average level during 2017-2019 (421.04/100000) (X2=2424.369, P < 0.001)and the incidence rate was 213.82/100000 in 2021, 49.22% lower than the average level during 2017-2019 (X2=1 578.996, P < 0.001). The incidence of class B and C infectious diseases in 2020 and 2021 were lower than the average incidence during 2017-2019, and the incidence of class B infectious diseases decreased by 38.79% in 2020 and 30.70% in 2021, respectively. The incidence rate of class C decreased by 71.23% in 2020 and 58.76%in 2021, respectively. The incidence rates of intestinal infectious disease, respiratory infectious disease, blood infectious disease and sexually transmitted disease during 2020-2021 were lower than the average levels during 2017-2019, which decreased by 59.27%, 68.02% and 36.52% respectively in 2020, and decreased by 37.96%, 56.37% and 30.51% respectively in 2021. The incidence rates of HFMD in 2020 and 2021 were still highest during 2020-2021 (39.01/100000 and 75.87/100000). Conclusion: The implementation of COVID-19 prevention and control measures had influence on the incidence of notifiable infectious diseases with different transmission routes, especially the respiratory infectious diseases, but the influence on the rank of top five notifiable infectious diseases was not obvious.

ABSTRACT

This study explores how the Chinese media have legitimated the Chinese government's anti-COVID policy at home by constructing the spectatorship of foreign countries' suffering during the pandemic. Using the Oriental News of Shanghai Media Group (SMG), a leader in Chinese provincial media, as a case study, the present study reveals that the core countries within the world system have been reported on more often than the semi-peripheral and peripheral countries. News about core countries also precedes news about non-core countries during the parts of broadcasts that concern the global COVID-19 pandemic. China's specific geopolitical and national political contexts have significantly influenced the mediation of COVID-19 suffering in various countries. While the US is represented as experiencing multiple forms of "chaos” during the pandemic, African countries are represented as "allied others” or "weak others.” News about India, a country with national conditions similar to those of China, reminds Chinese spectators that the Chinese government's strict controls are correct and effective. ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the interlinkages between the cryptocurrency and stock market by characterizing their connectedness starting from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021. Design/methodology/approach: The author employs a time-varying parameter vector autoregression (TVP-VAR) in combination with an extended joint connectedness approach. Findings: The pandemic shocks appear to have influences on the system-wide dynamic connectedness, which reaches a peak during the COVID-19 pandemic. Net total directional connectedness suggests that each cryptocurrency and stock have a heterogeneous role, conditional on their internal characteristics and external shocks. In particular, Bitcoin and Binance Coin are reported as the net receiver of shocks, while the role of Ethereum shifts from receivers to transmitters. As for the stock market, the US stock market stays persistent as net transmitters of shocks, while the Asian stock market (including Hong Kong and Shanghai) are the two consistent net receivers. During the COVID-19 pandemic shock, pairwise connectedness reveals that cryptocurrencies can explain the volatility of the stock markets with the impact most severe at the beginning of 2020. Practical implications: Insightful knowledge about key antecedents of contagion among these markets also help policymakers design adequate policies to reduce these markets' vulnerabilities and minimize the spread of risk or uncertainty across these markets. Originality/value: The author is the first to investigate the interlinkages between the cryptocurrency and the stock market and assess the influences of uncertain events like the COVID-19 health crisis on the dynamic interlinkages among these two markets. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The sustainability and generalizability of China's dynamic zero-COVID strategy on eliminating SARS-CoV-2 transmission has casted doubt globally, mainly because it has exacted high social and economic cost. This study aimed to estimate the disease burden during the first wave of Omicron in China and compared the cost-effectiveness of implementing a Real-world strategy (adjusted dynamic zero-COVID strategy) with two simulated strategies (routine and stricter dynamic zero-COVID strategy) to inform appropriate strategies for COVID-19 pandemic control. METHODS: A dynamic state-transition simulation model was developed to compare the health and cost outcomes between different dynamic zero-COVID strategies. Omicron-related healthcare costs were estimated from the societal perspective. Epidemiological parameter values were derived from data of real-world or generated by model calibration; costs and effectiveness parameter values were informed either by local data or published literature. The primary outcomes were total social cost, disability adjusted life-years (DALYs) and net monetary benefit (NMB). Deterministic sensitivity analyses (DSA) and scenario analyses were performed to assess the model robustness. RESULTS: The first wave of Omicron in Shanghai resulted in 47,646 DALYs lost and 415 billion RMB losses. At a willingness-to-pay threshold of 173,630 RMB (the GDP per capita of Shanghai in 2021) per DALY saved, the Real-world strategy was considered as the most cost-effective strategy due to its highest NMB (-407 billion). Results from DSA confirmed the robustness of our findings. CONCLUSION: Our finding supported the Real-world strategy taken by the Shanghai Municipal Government between March 1 and May 21, 2022 to control the first wave of Omicron outbreak. Moreover, our results indicated that whether the Stricter dynamic zero-COVID strategy is worth implementing at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak mainly depended on the infection rate of COVID-19 among primary contacts. Our analysis provides important evidence to inform policy makers to make appropriate decisions regarding COVID-19 pandemic management.

ABSTRACT

The lockdowns from the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) have led to a reduction in anthropogenic activities and have hence reduced primary air pollutant emissions, which were reported to have helped air quality improvements. However, air quality expressed by the air quality index (AQI) did not improve in Shanghai, China, during the COVID-19 outbreak in the spring of 2022. To better understand the reason, we investigated the variations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), PM2.5 (particular matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 μm), and PM10 (particular matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 μm) by using in situ and satellite measurements from 1 March to 31 June 2022 (pre-, full-, partial-, and post-lockdown periods). The results show that the benefit of the significantly decreased ground-level PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 was offset by amplified O3 pollution, therefore leading to the increased AQI. According to the backward trajectory analyses and multiple linear regression (MLR) model, the anthropogenic emissions dominated the observed changes in air pollutants during the full-lockdown period relative to previous years (2019–2021), whereas the long-range transport and local meteorological parameters (temperature, air pressure, wind speed, relative humidity, and precipitation) influenced little. We further identified the chemical mechanism that caused the increase in O3 concentration. The amplified O3 pollution during the full-lockdown period was caused by the reduction in anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NOx) under a VOC-limited regime and high background O3 concentrations owing to seasonal variations. In addition, we found that in the downtown area, ground-level PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 more sensitively responded to the changes in lockdown measures than they did in the suburbs. These findings provide new insights into the impact of emission control restrictions on air quality and have implications for air pollution control in the future. © 2023 by the authors.
